Tamang Heritage Trek

$dataTitle

Overview

The Tamang Heritage Trail is both a superb introduction to Trekking in Nepal and a cultural adventure amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole country, with rich Tamang culture, amazing natural scenery and awesome mountain vistas.

Developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (TRPAP) under the UNDP fund, the Tamang Heritage Trail is a newly developed trekking destination which was developed to distribute equal tourism opportunities among the poor rural communities living in the Rasuwa region. The region has the feel of little Tibet and trekkers who have gone there claim it is like trekking in Langtang 20 years ago. Since its development the revenue and other income generated by the tourism activities in this region contributed directly to the local communities supporting the local livelihood, women’s empowerment and environmental conservations.

The trek initially starts from Kathmandu from where a 132km stretch of road leads us to Syabru Bensi by either local bus or private car. From Syafru Bensi the route passes through Goljung, Gatlang, Chilime, Tatopani, Rasuwagadi and Briddim whilst ending back again in Syabru Bensi or Dunche.

Day 3 Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, bus drive approx. 7 to 8 hrs
After an early breakfast we drive north from Kathmandu to Syabu Besi. We will travel via Trisuli Bazaar to Syabrubesi where we will spend our night. If you are traveling during the months of March and April you would see that the Rhododendron forests are in full bloom and different species of trees, birds and butterflies. Overnight at teahouse.

Day 4 Start trek to Gatlang (2238m). Approximate 5 hours
After two to three hours of ascent from Syabrubesi we reach a view point where we gain fantastic views of the Ganesh Himal, Gosainkunda range and Langtang Lirung. We head down to Goljang valley (lunch stop) which is an hour walking down hill from our view point. Today we walk through many villages and along the trails there are numerous Buddhist chortens and mani walls. Gatlang is a beautiful Tamang village that is set high on a hillside among terraced fields. Overnight at teahouse/home-stay.

Day 5 Trek To Tatopani (2607m). Walk approximately 6 hrs
Our walk today begins by descending to Thangbuche (near Chilime) by the Bhotekoshi River. After Chilime, we start to ascend first by crossing a small hanging bridge and continue until we reach Tatopani. Enroute, we have excellent vies of the Langtang Range and Ganesh Himal. Tatopani literally means 'hot water', where one can cleanse in the natural hot springs. Locals believe that the waters have a healing quality that eases away your aches and pains. Overnight at teahouse.

Day 6 Trek to Thuman (2338m) via Nagthali (3165m). Walk approximately 7 hrs
This will be the longest trekking day. This morning we ascend to Nagthali, which was once used as a popular meditation center for the local monks and priests. Nagthali Danda (3300m), the highest pass of the area, lies in high open grassland and offers panoramic views of snow covered mountains like Langtang Lirung, Kerung, Ganesh Himal and Sanjen Ranges. We descend down to Thuman, a heavily Tibetan influenced Tamang village. If we are lucky, we might come across large troops of Nepal Gray Langur Monkeys. The ancient monasteries and houses adorned with rich wood engravings here are an unforgettable experience. Overnight at Thuman.

Day 7 Trek to Timure & Tibetan border. Walk approximately 4 hrs
We begin with an easy flat trails which descends to Timure en route to the old trade route to Tibet. After lunch and allocating our rooms at teahouse in Timure we head towards Rasuwa Gadhi, an historical reminder of the Nepal-Tibet relations that has existed for many centuries. A suspension bridge here links Nepal and Tibet. Overnight at teahouse.

Day 8 Trek to Briddim Vilalge (2239m) Walk approximately 6 hrs
Passing through rhododendron forests and meadows we head towards Briddim, another Tibetan influenced Tamang village located in the bosom of the Langtang Himal. More than 40 houses are spread in Z shape. Most of the houses are made up of stone and have roofs of split shake. Overnight at teahouse/home-stay.
